Flex Jets Y-Sail lines up in Shotgun out of Spread Y-Flex personnel and shows a classic sail concept to the right paired with a flood look to the left. The backside receiver runs a deep out while the inside receiver runs a flat route, and to the play side the TE runs a corner route (red) that clears out for the outside receiver sailing underneath on a deep out, with the running back releasing to the flat as the underneath sail piece. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built on high low stress: the primary read is the deep corner route to hold the safety, then work down to the sail out route and finally check to the flat if the underneath zone squeezes.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment since this concept is designed to punish both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with the corner and out combo. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the sail out route the running back in the flat becomes wide open as the checkdown. Key the deep safety on the play side, if he stays flat footed on the corner route that window will close quickly and you need to progress down to the sail out immediately. Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the intermediate zone, since a jumped sail route can lead to a tipped pass or pick six if the quarterback does not go through the full progression. Man coverage with an overload blitz is the biggest threat to this play, so recognize man alignment on the corner and outside receiver pre-snap and be ready to check down quickly.
Check pre-snap for two high safeties or a single high shell before the snap since the corner route stresses Cover 2 hard and the sail out attacks Cover 3 cornerbacks sitting on curl flat zones.
Use the TE corner as your first read against Cover 2 to force the safety to widen, then come down to the sail route on the out for an easy completion window.
If the defense shows man coverage, hot route the backside deep out into a slant or speed out to give yourself a quicker man beater instead of forcing the deep corner against tight coverage.
This play works best on second and medium or third and long since it takes time to develop the high low read on the sail side.
Pair this call with Y Stick or Curl Flats from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter zone drops, then come back to Y Sail once they start jumping the short routes.
