Smash HB Check is a classic Cover 2 beater run from Spread Y-Flex with 11 personnel. To the right side, the isolated WR (labeled 1 in red) runs a quick hitch or smash route while the diagram shows a corner route stemming outside from the same side, creating a true smash concept that stretches the flat defender and the deep half safety vertically. On the left side, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route while the slot runs a short flat/check route underneath, giving the QB a mirrored smash look on both sides of the field with the HB releasing into a check route out of the backfield as a built-in outlet. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to whichever side the Cover 2 shell shows a hard flat defender, then works down to the underneath hitch or flat route, and finally checks down to the HB if both levels are covered.

Defensive Reads

Look for two deep safeties pre-snap since this concept is built to exploit Cover 2 zone drops where the corner has to choose between the flat and the deep corner route. Watch the cornerback depth at the snap, if he sinks into the flat too fast the corner route behind him is wide open for a walk in touchdown throw. Key the flat defender on both sides of the field, if a linebacker or nickel drops hard into the underneath zone that signals soft Cover 2 or Cover 4 and the smash read should go to the corner route. Beware Cover 3 or Cover 1 man looks with a single high safety, since a sinking corner and a robber linebacker underneath can squeeze both levels of the smash concept and force a check to the HB route. Watch for disguised blitzes off the edge, since the HB releasing on his check route is your best answer to five man pressure that overloads the protection.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing a two high shell before the snap because this play is designed specifically to attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 zone drops with the corner over hitch combo. If the safety cheats to one side, immediately work the smash concept away from that rotation for the easiest throwing window. Use the HB check route as your emergency valve against blitz heavy defenses that bring five or six man pressure, since the HB can leak out for a quick outlet before the corner routes fully develop. Hot route the backside outside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you diagnose man coverage, since the smash concept loses some of its zone beating value against man to man unless you win with double moves. Pair this play with Four Verticals or Y Corner in the same set to keep defenses honest, since both plays punish safeties who sit too shallow trying to jump the smash flat route.
