Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment because a single high safety cheating toward the strong side signals Cover 3 and opens the dig route for the TE crossing into the void. Watch the flat defender and outside cornerback on the Spot side, since a defender sitting too deep in the flat leaves the underneath hitch open for an easy conversion throw. Post-snap, track the middle linebacker or hook defender's drop, if he sprints to the flat or bites on the go route clear-out, the TE dig will have a clean throwing lane through the middle. Be wary of user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone, as they can jump the TE's crossing route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Man coverage with a robber safety underneath can take away both the dig and the hitch, so recognize man alignment early and be ready to hot route or check down to the HB flat route.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a single high safety or two high shell, since this play is built to punish Cover 3 zone drops with the TE dig sitting in the void behind the linebackers. If you see man coverage, hot route the underneath hitch into a quick out or slant to create separation instead of sitting in a crowded zone landmark. Use this on second and medium to third and short situations where the sticks route from the inside receiver gives you a built in conversion option if the TE dig gets taken away. Pair this play in sequence with Four Verticals or Y Stick from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the same shell after seeing the TE work the middle. Against teams that key the TE quickly with a linebacker spy or lurk defender, look to the flat route from the HB as a quick check to keep the defense honest and set up the dig shot later in the drive.
