Breakdown

Slot Outs is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex that floods both sidelines with horizontal breaking routes. To the left, the outside receiver runs a vertical seam while the slot receiver breaks outside on an out route at the sticks. To the right, the outside receiver hits a deep vertical seam while the inner receiver runs an out breaking route, and the tight end releases into an out as well, giving you stacked out routes on both sides of the field. This is a zone beater at its core, using the two out routes and the two seam routes to stretch cover 3 and cover 4 defenders horizontally and vertically at the same time, with the primary read progression starting to the side with two out breakers if the defense shows single high safety look.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, that alignment tells you cover 3 or man coverage is likely and the out routes will have room to sit down against sinking zone defenders. If the defense shows two deep safeties, expect cover 2 or cover 4 corners jumping the out routes, so key the flat defender's depth to decide whether to throw underneath or trust the seam. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow flat zone can jump the out routes, so if you see a user lurking near the sticks be ready to move to the opposite side out route or check down. Cover 3 with aggressive linebacker blitzes is vulnerable here because the seam routes occupy the deep defenders while the outs settle into the vacated underneath zones. Man coverage with no safety help over the top can be beaten instantly on the seam routes if your receiver wins the release, so watch cornerback press alignment before deciding which read to prioritize.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate to the side with the double out concept since that side punishes cover 2 and cover 4 corners sitting on the flat.

Use the vertical seam routes as clear out routes against cover 3, they pull the deep third defenders away and open up the out routes underneath for easy completions.

This play excels on third and medium to third and long since the out routes sit right at the sticks and give the quarterback a rhythm throw with a clean pocket.

Hot route the tight end into a flat route if you are getting pressure off the edge and need a faster developing outlet against blitz looks.

Pair Slot Outs with Four Verticals or PA Seams from this same set so the seam routes look identical pre-snap, forcing linebackers and safeties to hesitate on their zone drops.
