Read Option out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex lines the QB up with the HB offset in the backfield for a true zone read look, with four wide receivers stemming vertical releases off the snap to hold corners and safeties honest. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sealing playside gaps while leaving the backside end unblocked for the QB to read. This is a designed run play built to attack aggressive defensive ends and undersized fronts, with the primary read being the backside DE: give the ball on the give read if he crashes down the line, or pull it and attack the edge if he stays home to contain the QB.
Watch the backside defensive end depth and hips at the snap, if he squeezes down inside toward the mesh point the ball should be given to the HB. Slow-flow linebackers who step up hard on run action are the primary threat if the QB pulls and bounces outside, so contain speed at the second level is critical. User the backside DE manually in critical short yardage or goal line spots to sit the mesh point and force a give every time, taking away the QB run entirely. Safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap signal an extra run defender, which favors sending the DE hard upfield to force a pull read into a numbers disadvantage for the offense. Man coverage on the outside receivers with no underneath help means the defense is banking on gang tackling in the box, so spy the QB with a linebacker to eliminate the scramble threat.
Check the backside defensive end alignment before the snap, if he is crashing hard on run downs he is susceptible to the pull read all game long.
Use this on early downs against base 4-3 or 4-2-5 fronts where the defensive ends are taught to attack the mesh point aggressively.
Pair this with Inverted Veer and QB Zone from the same set to keep defenders guessing on your zone read tendencies, forcing DEs to hesitate on every snap.
If the defense starts sitting the DE outside to take away the QB pull, switch to Inside Zone or HB Draw from this set to attack downhill through the vacated interior gaps.
Motion the slot receiver pre-snap to identify man versus zone coverage, this helps you decide whether to trust the perimeter blocks if you pull the ball outside.
