617 is a play action flood concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex with 11 personnel. Backside, the X runs a deep Go while the TE works an Out underneath, and to the strong side you get a three level flood: the outside WR runs a deep Corner, the inside slot runs a Curl, and the HB releases from the backfield on a Wheel route after selling run action. The primary read is the Wheel to Curl to Corner flood side, working low to high off the flow of the linebackers, with the backside Go as a shot play if the safety bites on the play action fake.
Defensive Reads
Watch the strong side linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits at depth without triggering on the play fake he can wall off the Wheel route from the HB. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a two high shell that rotates late can jump the Corner route and force the quarterback down to the Curl or Wheel. Post-snap, look for the flat defender or slot corner sinking into the Curl window, that indicates zone coverage and opens the Corner route behind him. User controlled defenders lurking underneath the Curl are the biggest threat to this concept, so quarterbacks need to read the Wheel first if that lurk shows. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the backside Go route means the play action shot play is live if the fake holds the front seven.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs when defenses are keying run action to sell the play fake and get the HB open on the Wheel against overaggressive linebackers.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high shells since the flood side overloads one third of the field and single high safeties get stressed the most.
If you see man coverage with a linebacker matched on the HB, the Wheel is nearly automatic once the fake sells and the LB flows toward the line.
Against zone shells, work the Curl to Corner combo since it stretches the flat and hole defender vertically and horizontally on the same side.
Pair this with Y Corner and Curl Flats from the same set so defenses cannot key on run action or the flood side without risking a big play elsewhere.
