Breakdown

HB Draw out of Spread Y-Flex Shotgun sends four receivers vertical on the outside (two per side) to hold corners and safeties deep while the QB shows a quick dropback fake before handing off to the HB. The offensive line pass sets initially to sell blitz pickup or a pass play before releasing into run blocking lanes up the middle, letting the defensive front crash upfield past the RB. This is a pure run play designed to punish aggressive pass rush and blitz-heavy defenses, with the primary read being the HB finding the widest crease off the initial blocking surge, usually between the guards or off tackle depending on how the front flows.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 1 with deep safety help, since these shells commit fewer defenders to stopping the run and open up the interior lanes. Key the middle linebacker depth: if he is sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage rather than reading the QB dropback, he can beat you to the hole and blow up the draw. Watch defensive tackle alignment presnap, since a nose shaded tight over center can clog the primary running lane before the HB gets to the second level. Post-snap, track user-controlled defenders flowing hard to contain or dropping into shallow zones, as a spy linebacker or a defender sitting in the box is the biggest counter to this concept. This play struggles against goal line or heavy run-blitz packages where extra defenders are stacked in the box, since there are not enough blockers to seal every gap.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs or in obvious passing situations like 3rd and long when the defense shows blitz or aggressive pass rush looks presnap.

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard off the edge, since the delayed handoff exploits overpursuit from speed rushers.

Pair this with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek from the same set so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the delayed run action out of identical formation looks.

Avoid calling this against disciplined zone defenses that stay home with linebackers reading run first, since spy or contain linebackers can blow this up immediately.

Take manual control of the HB after the handoff to make one cut off the puller or center, then trust your blocking up front rather than trying to force it outside.
