Breakdown

Slant Flat is a quick-hitting horizontal stretch concept run from Shotgun Spread Y-Flex 11 personnel. To the left, the outside receiver runs a hard slant across the middle while the inside receiver releases underneath to the flat, creating a natural high low pick combo on that side. To the right, the diagram shows a corner route stretching vertically outside while a deeper crosser works from the opposite side into that void, giving the quarterback a two level read to both sides of the field. This is a man beater and zone beater built for quick timing throws, attacking Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with the slant flat combo underneath while the boundary corner route punishes off man coverage or soft zone drops on the backside.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment, two high shells with soft corners at ten yards tell you the slant flat combo will have room to work underneath. Post-snap, watch the flat defender and curl to flat linebacker, if he widens fast to the flat the slant window stays open for a rhythm throw. Cover 3 with a hard sink from the strong safety can take away the deep corner route, so be ready to check down to the flat if that safety sinks quickly. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position over the slant will bait the quarterback into the flat, recognize that lurk and reset your progression before the throw. Blitz packages that send extra pressure off the edge shorten the quarterback's clock, so identify blitz looks pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out fast on the flat or slant without hesitation.

Usage Tips

Use this in obvious passing downs like third and short to medium where the underneath slant flat combo can pick up an easy first down against soft zone drops.

Read the flat defender first, if he sits on the flat route the slant window opens immediately behind him for a quick strike throw.

Against man coverage, hot route the flat runner to a speed out or option route if the defense shows a hard press corner to avoid a jam at the line.

Pair this play with Double Slants or Stick Double Slant in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath combos and full field stretches.

Look to sequence this with Y Sail or Corner Strike later in a series once the defense starts jumping the flat route, since the corner route on the backside can hit for explosive yardage if a safety cheats down.
