Breakdown

Curl Flats out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex is a quick-hitting zone beater built to attack the underneath zones with a horizontal stretch. The diagram shows a three-man route combo to the left with the outside receiver running a deep curl while the inner receiver breaks to the flat, plus a middle receiver crossing underneath to the opposite flat, while the backside receiver (marked 1) runs a curl route on an island against the boundary corner. The read progression starts with the boundary curl route (1) as the primary hot read against man coverage, then works to the curl flat combo on the other side to attack zone defenders who widen or sit too deep.

Defensive Reads

Watch for cornerbacks pressed at the line with safeties rotated into a single high shell, since that usually signals man coverage that can be exploited by the number 1 curl route working away from the flat defender. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, if the flat defender bails too deep or the curl defender sits shallow you have a natural throwing window in the soft spot of a Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone. Identify user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field, since a smart user can jump the crossing route or bait the quarterback into an interception on the flat throw. Recognize blitz packages with a nano blitz look pre-snap, since the quick flat and curl reads give the quarterback an escape valve if the protection breaks down. Against Cover 2 shells, look for the curl route sitting down in front of the deep half safety rather than trying to force it over the top, since the underneath flat defender will be occupied by the flat route.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap to identify two-high shells, since curl flat concepts thrive against zone coverage that leaves soft spots between the flat defender and the curl sitting linebacker.

Use the number 1 receiver as your first read against man coverage cornerbacks who are playing tight or showing blitz, since that curl route can win quickly on a slant angle if the defender bites on the flat fake.

Motion the flat receiver pre-snap to confirm man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know you are facing man coverage and can key the curl route for a rhythm throw.

Pair this play with Double Slants or Y Stick in the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick curl flat reads and quick slant breaks, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Best used on second and medium to third and short situations where the defense is more likely to play softer zone shells, since the curl routes need a beat to develop against tight man coverage.
