RPO Read Screen out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex is a true run-pass option that pairs an inside zone run look with a bubble or quick screen to the perimeter, giving the quarterback a pre-determined key defender to read after the snap. The offensive line and backfield action sell the run, while the screen receiver sets up outside with blockers releasing to convoy him downfield. The primary read is the alley defender or overhang linebacker: if he crashes on the run fake, pull it and throw the screen, if he sits or bails to cover the screen, hand it off and let the zone run develop.
Watch the flow of the play side linebacker immediately after the snap, if he steps up hard to fill the run gap that confirms the screen is open Check safety depth pre-snap, a single high shell with the corner playing off leaves the screen lane wide open since the corner has to respect the deep route first Zone coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that roll the corner over the top are the most vulnerable since the flat defender is forced to choose between run support and the screen Man coverage with press corners and an extra force defender in the box shuts this down quickly, especially if the slot defender squats on the bubble instead of biting on run action Beware user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow flat zone, a smart user player will bait the run fake and jump the screen throw for a big play against you
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm whether the defense is playing base personnel or has an extra defender rotated down against the run look
Identify your alley defender or slot corner before the snap since he is the key you are reading, and if he is walked up tight to the line of scrimmage that is a green light to lean toward the screen
Hot route the backside receiver into a hitch or slant if you see man coverage so you have a built-in answer against blitz-heavy defenses that abandon the screen side
Run this on early downs in 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep the defense honest, then pair it later in a series with Read Option or Inside Zone to punish defenses that start sitting on the screen
Sequence this with RPO Alert Screen or RPO Zone Alert Screen in the same drive so defenders cannot key one specific look, forcing linebackers to hesitate on every snap
