Breakdown

Corner Strike is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex that attacks both sidelines with high low reads on each side. To the left, the outside receiver runs a deep over route across the field while the inside receiver crosses underneath into a shallow drag to the opposite flat, creating a natural rub for man coverage. To the right, the outside receiver runs a corner route up the numbers while the inside slot receiver runs a quick out to the flat, giving the quarterback a high low read on that side. This is a man beater at its core because the crossing action on the left and the corner/flat combo on the right both force defenders to work through traffic or cover routes with no help over the top, and the primary read progression starts with the boundary corner route before working back to the field side crossers.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 presnap because the deep corner route wins outside leverage against a lone deep defender and the crossing routes create natural picks against man defenders. Watch for a cornerback playing outside shade with a deep safety rolled to that side, that alignment signals cloud coverage designed to jump the corner route and should push your primary read to the drag and crosser side instead. Post snap, track the flat defender on the right side, if he sinks too deep chasing the corner route the underneath out becomes an easy pitch and catch. Beware of user controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position near the crossing routes on the left, a smart user can jump the shallow drag if he reads the mesh point quickly, so be ready to reset to the corner route or the right side out. This concept struggles against a hard Cover 4 shell with corners playing outside technique and safeties gaining depth immediately, since it removes the vertical throwing lane and clogs the underneath crossers with extra defenders.

Usage Tips

Start your presnap read on the deep corner route side, if the corner and safety both bail into a two high shell before the snap you want to check the strength of the corner route matchup because it becomes a pure vertical win for your receiver.

Use the shallow drag and crosser combo on the left as your answer versus man coverage since the natural rub at the mesh point creates immediate separation against tight man technique.

Hot route the flat receiver into a shorter option route on third and short so you have a built in checkdown if the corner route is smothered by a hard cloud rotation.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or Y Corner earlier in a series so defenses respect the vertical shots, then come back to Corner Strike to hit the flat and drag combo underneath when safeties start cheating deep.

Attack this concept on second and medium to long distance since it needs time to let the corner route develop and the crossers to clear the shallow zone.
