Empty Mtn Dagger lines up five wide out of the Spread Y-Flex empty formation, with the classic Dagger combo stacked on the left side: the outside receiver runs a vertical seam clearing space while the inner receiver sits down on a deep dig sitting right behind the linebackers. On the right side the slot runs a deep out breaking to the sideline while the outside receiver runs an inward dig from the numbers to the middle of the field, and the backside receiver runs a shallow crossing route underneath everything to hold linebackers and provide a checkdown. This is a classic man and zone beater, with the seam clearing out the deep half or third for the dig sitting behind it, and the shallow cross serving as the outlet against blitz pressure. Primary read progression starts with the seam-to-dig Dagger combo on the left, then works to the deep out on the right if the middle is jumped, with the shallow cross as the final checkdown.
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, since Cover 2 leaves the deep dig wide open in the seam once the corner sinks with the vertical route. Cover 3 is vulnerable to the same dig sitting down in the middle third void created by the seam clearing the deep defender. If the defense shows man coverage with a single high safety, expect the seam route to win against a slower linebacker or safety trying to match up in space. Key on the middle linebacker's drop, if he sits shallow to take away the dig, the deep out breaking to the sideline on the right becomes the answer. Disguised blitzes and nano blitzes off the edge are the main counter to this play, so identify unblocked rushers immediately and get the shallow cross out quickly as the checkdown.
Motion is available pre-snap on this play, use it to identify man versus zone by watching if a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
Look at the safeties before the snap, if they are showing a two-high shell the dig sitting behind the seam is your first read since it will settle right in the void between zone defenders.
Against man coverage the seam route on the left wins quickly if the defender bites on the dig fake underneath, so key on the corner's hips at the top of the route.
Use the shallow cross as your answer versus disguised blitzes since it clears fast and gives the quarterback a quick outlet before pressure arrives.
Pair this play with Four Verticals and Y Cross in the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical stress and horizontal stretch concepts, forcing linebackers to respect both the seam and the shallow drag.
