Four Verticals out of Spread Y-Flex sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with both outside WRs and the TE releasing straight up the numbers and the slot receiver (Y) running a vertical seam that bends slightly toward the middle of the field. The HB stays in to check release before working up the seam behind the line, giving the QB a true five-man vertical stretch that stresses the deep zones sideline to sideline. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by overloading the deep safeties, and the primary read progression starts with the seam route (the blue-marked receiver) before working outside to the numbers routes based on safety rotation.
Check for two-high safety alignment before the snap, since honest Cover 2 shells struggle to cover four verticals and will bleed a big play up the seam or the numbers. Watch the single high safety in Cover 3 looks, because he can only help one side of the field and the opposite vertical route will win late. Identify user-controlled defenders dropping into a deep half or deep third immediately after the snap, since a lurking safety who reads the QB's eyes can jump the seam route and cut off the primary read. Look for Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with corners playing outside leverage, since this coverage funnels vertical routes into help and can shut down the outside numbers throws. Beware disguised blitzes that bring extra rushers while playing man coverage underneath, because the vertical stems take time to develop and the QB needs a clean pocket to let routes stretch the defense.
Use this play on 2nd or 3rd and long when you need a chunk play and expect the defense to sit in a deep zone shell.
Read the safeties pre-snap: if you see two high safeties split wide, attack the seam route first since it splits the difference between them.
Against Cover 3, key the single high safety and throw opposite his depth, since one deep third defender cannot cover two vertical routes on that side.
Pair this play with Y Stick or Curl Flats in your play-calling sequence to bait linebackers into sitting on short routes, then hit Four Verticals off the same formation look once the defense adjusts.
If the defense shows man coverage, use a hot route to convert the TE into a shallow crosser or change the seam runner's release to create natural separation against a trailing defender.
