If cornerbacks are playing off coverage on the outside verticals, expect the safety help to bracket the screen side, meaning the crosser becomes the better answer against soft zone landmarks.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or second and short when defenses expect a standard dropback pass, since the screen action punishes aggressive pass rush calls.

Check the defensive front before the snap. If you see a heavy blitz package or extra rushers crashing the edge, the HB screen has a much higher hit rate since blockers get a numbers advantage outside.

Watch for the flat defender and outside linebacker leverage on the screen side. If they sit and read, consider hot routing the crosser into a quick drag to give yourself a faster underneath outlet.

Pair this call with Mtn HB Swing or HB Slip Screen earlier in a drive so defenders start keying run or quick screen action, then hit them with the deep clearing routes off this same look when they jump the flat.

Against zone shells, trust the verticals on the left side to hold safeties deep while the crosser occupies underneath zone defenders, opening a passing lane for the screen blockers to work.
