Mtn Sluggo Replace runs a pre-snap motion to the backfield and attacks vertically with a sluggo (slant and go) from the middle receiver, paired with a corner route breaking outside from the tight end alignment and a flat replace route underneath from the motion man. On the backside, two receivers stack a hitch and clear-out combo to hold the corner and safety on that side of the field. This is a man beater built to exploit the sluggo's double move against press or trail technique, with the primary read starting on the sluggo route for the big play shot, then working down to the corner route and finally the flat replace as the checkdown against tight man coverage.
Watch the cornerback's leverage on the receiver running the sluggo route before the snap, if he is playing tight press or inside shade he is at risk of getting beat deep on the double move. Track the second level defender assigned to the motion man, if he trails across the formation in man coverage that confirms man beater conditions favor the sluggo and corner routes. Key the safety shell after the snap, a single high safety who bites on the slant portion of the sluggo route opens up the deep shot, while two deep safeties can rob the sluggo and force the quarterback to the corner or flat replace. Identify blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge opposite the motion, since the flat replace route becomes the answer against a hot blitz but the sluggo needs time to develop against zone blitz looks. This play struggles against zone coverage with a deep half safety sitting over the top since he can undercut the sluggo route, so look for teams sitting in two high shells to shut this concept down.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a strong man coverage indicator to trust the sluggo route. Look immediately to the sluggo route off the snap since the slant and go is designed to freeze cornerbacks playing man or trail technique, especially on early downs when defenses are more likely to sit in single high man looks. If the cornerback jumps the slant portion of the sluggo, be ready to layer the throw over the top since the double move should have him beat vertically. Use the flat replace route as your answer versus underneath zone drops or when the pass rush forces a quick decision, it is the built in checkdown against man coverage that blitzes off the edge. Pair this call with Mtn HB Swing or Mtn H Stick earlier in a series so defenders start keying flat and shallow routes off motion, then hit them with the sluggo shot when they bite on the underneath action.
