Breakdown

Y Cross out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex sends the backside X on a deep vertical to clear space while the inside slot runs an under route across the field underneath it, and the front side WR runs a quick out to occupy the flat defender. The Y (tight end) is the primary read, running a deep crossing route from the strong side all the way across the field, breaking into open grass against zone or working away from man defenders on the backside. The HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel/flat route to the flat as a checkdown or man beater against linebackers who bite on the crosser, and the play is a pure dropback pass with no run action, designed to stress both man and zone coverage with horizontal stretch.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage across the board, especially linebackers matched up on the Y, since the crosser is designed to create separation against man defenders trying to trail across the field. Identify if the defense is playing zone with a middle linebacker sitting in the shallow to intermediate area, since a well timed zone drop can undercut the crosser and bait a turnover. Look for single high safety alignment pre snap, which suggests the defense may be vulnerable to the deep vertical route drawing coverage away from the crosser. Post snap, key on any user controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, since Y Cross is vulnerable to a rat in the hole cutting off the crossing route's path. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops from linebackers tend to shut this down if the defender sinks and reads the quarterback's eyes instead of biting on the flat or vertical routes.

Usage Tips

Read the Y (TE) crosser first since it is the primary target and works well against both man and zone due to the natural pick and space created by the vertical and under routes.

Check pre snap if the defense is showing single high or two high safety shells, since the deep vertical route on the backside can hold a single high safety and open up the crosser underneath.

If you see man coverage with linebackers who struggle to run with tight ends in space, take the Y Cross with confidence over the middle.

Use the HB release to the flat as a built in checkdown against zone drops or if the crosser gets jumped by an underneath defender in a zone shell.

Pair Y Cross with Four Verticals or PA Seams from the same set to keep the defense honest against both quick horizontal stretches and vertical shots, forcing linebackers to respect multiple levels.
