RPO Zone Peek is a run-pass option built on an inside zone blocking scheme with the quarterback peeking a slot receiver on a quick in-breaking route while the offensive line and HB execute the zone run action. This play functions as both a run play and an RPO, giving you a built-in answer against overaggressive run fits without needing a hard audible. The primary read progression starts with the peek route defender: if the second level defender bites on the run action or the peek window opens, pull and throw, otherwise hand off into the zone run.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker or nickel defender who is responsible for the peek window, if he crashes down hard on run action that is your green light to pull and throw immediately. Check safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are sitting deep in a two high shell the underneath peek window is usually easier to access. Look for a run blitz or crashing defensive end which signals the defense is selling out against the zone run, making the peek read almost automatic. Man coverage with press corners can shut down the peek route quickly if the defender has an outside numbers advantage, so be ready to trust the run more in these situations. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone near the peek route are the biggest threat to this play, if you see a user spy sitting in that window abort the throw and stick with the handoff.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm the run fit before the snap since this play thrives when defenses are stacked to stop inside zone. Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap because single high often means a run blitz is coming, which opens the peek throw immediately. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you expect man coverage to give yourself a second option beyond the built-in peek. Run this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, to keep defenses honest and force linebackers to respect both the run and the peek window. Pair this with RPO Peek Slant and Inside Zone from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on the peek key, and mix in HB Draw or QB Zone off similar formations to keep the defensive front guessing.
