Breakdown

Mtn Out H-Angle lines up in Shotgun Spread Y-Flex with 11 personnel and uses pre-snap motion into the backfield. On the play side, the outside receiver runs a deep out while the slot receiver releases underneath on an angle route, giving you a natural high-low man beater against off coverage. Backside, the vertical stem breaks into a deep crossing route while the underneath receiver runs an out to the sideline, stretching the defense horizontally and clearing space for the angle route out of the backfield. The primary read starts with the angle route against man coverage, then progresses to the deep out on the play side if the defense sits in zone.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and count defenders in the box since a two high shell invites the deep out while a single high look means the angle route is your primary target. Watch the motion defender at the snap since man coverage will show a defender chasing the H-back across the formation before the ball is snapped. Post-snap, key any user-controlled linebacker or safety flashing down to the angle route since a well-timed lurk can jump that throw and bait a turnover. Cover 3 zone drops leave a soft spot for the deep out on the boundary, so identify if the corner sinks into a deep third or stays flat footed on the numbers. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge will remove underneath defenders from the angle route, so recognize pressure looks pre-snap and get the ball out on time.

Usage Tips

Motion the H-back before the snap to identify man versus zone coverage based on whether a defender follows across the formation.

Against man coverage, target the angle route first since it creates immediate separation off the linebacker or nickel defender who has to redirect out of the backfield.

Against zone shells, work the deep out on the play side since it sits in the void behind underneath zone defenders and in front of deep coverage.

Use this play on second or third and medium since the angle route and out combo give you multiple completion windows short of the sticks.

Pair this with Mtn HB Cross Screen or RPO Alert Screen earlier in a drive so defenders bite on quick game and open up the angle route later in the series.
