Breakdown

HB Quick Base is a downhill dive run out of the Shotgun Spread Y-Flex set with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the HB taking a quick handoff and hitting the A-gap, with the offensive line firing off the ball for a straight-ahead zone/dive blocking scheme up front. This is a base run play designed to attack the interior quickly before the defense can flow, and the primary read is the playside A-gap, bouncing to the backside cutback lane if the linebackers or defensive tackles clog the initial hole.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap. If the mike and will are sitting shallow near the line of scrimmage, they can fill the dive lane immediately and blow this play up. Check for a stacked box with eight defenders. Heavy fronts against 11 personnel signal the defense is selling out to stop the run, so this play loses value against that look. Identify if the defense is in a nano blitz alignment with a defensive tackle shaded into the A-gap presnap, since that alignment can beat the blocking scheme before the back even gets the ball. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down the line, since a disciplined edge defender can string this play out and force a negative gain. Man coverage shells with press corners tend to leave extra bodies in the box, so treat this run cautiously against Cover 0 or Cover 1 looks with blitzers showing.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage to keep defenses honest against your RPO and play-action heavy playbook in this set.

Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or one of the RPO options like RPO Peek Slant instead.

Use manual ball carrier control to press the playside A-gap hard, then read the fullback or guard's block to decide whether to bounce outside or cut back.

Pair this play with RPO Alert Screen and RPO Zone Peek in the same personnel grouping so the defense cannot sit on run keys without exposing quick throws.

Run this out of no-huddle after showing the same shotgun look on previous snaps so linebackers cannot diagnose run versus RPO based on formation alone.
