Breakdown

PA Seams is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Spread Y-Flex that sends three receivers vertical up the numbers while the fourth receiver runs a seam route up the middle of the field from the slot. The play fakes the handoff to hold linebackers and safeties for a beat before the four eligible receivers stem into their vertical stems, making this a shot play designed to stress two-high shells and attack off man coverage on the seam. Primary read progression starts with the seam route (red) up the middle since it exploits the play-action freeze on linebackers and safeties, then works to the outside verticals if the safety squats to take away the seam.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two-high safeties cheating down into the box pre-snap, since that signals man coverage or run support that opens up the seam route If you see a single-high safety shell with cornerbacks pressed at the line, expect man coverage and prioritize the seam route before the safety can rotate over Cover 3 zone with a deep middle safety is the toughest shell against this concept since it removes the seam throwing window and forces you to outside verticals Look for user-controlled linebackers dropping into a robber or lurk technique in the middle of the field, as they can undercut the seam route if the play-action fake does not hold them Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can shorten your play-action window, so key on pre-snap blitz indicators like walked-up linebackers or safety rotation to the line of scrimmage

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in shot-play situations where you have shown run tendencies to sell the play-action fake and freeze the second level defenders

Check pre-snap for two-high safeties sitting shallow, since that alignment invites the seam route to split them if the play-action fake holds the linebackers

If the defense shows single-high man coverage, hot route the outside verticals into skinny posts or go routes to widen the throwing lanes against a deep safety

Pair this with Four Verticals in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot key on the seam concept alone, forcing them to respect both shot plays every snap

Best called on first or second down and medium to long distance when defenses are more willing to bite on run action, avoid it on obvious passing downs where safeties stay deep
