Trio Y-Flex is Shotgun's trips-strong look with the tight end flexed out of the formation, giving you a true 3x1 alignment out of 11 personnel without sacrificing the TE's frame at the catch point. You get the running back offset in the backfield, three receivers stacked to the strong side (typically the flexed TE at the number three spot or the slot depending on play art), and an isolated X receiver on the backside. That flexed TE is the whole point of the set: defenses that keep a linebacker or safety matched to him in man are giving you a size mismatch on option routes and dig concepts, while defenses that bump a corner over to cover him leave the box light against Inside Zone and Same Side Zone.
What separates Trio Y-Flex from tighter Shotgun sets is the horizontal spacing it forces. With three to one side and a lone backside receiver, the defense has to declare its strength pre-snap, which tells you whether you are attacking single-high man with the isolated X or flooding a two-deep shell with the trips side. The set also carries one of the deepest RPO and option menus in the formation: RPO Alert Bubble, RPO Zone Alert Omaha, Shock H Option, Slot Under H-Angle, and Mtn Out H-Angle all let you read leverage after the snap rather than guessing before it.
The play list leans heavily on Mtn (mountain) tags and play-action, which means you can run Inside Zone and HB Quick Base to establish the run read, then hit Mtn Mills, Mtn Shock Slot Dig, PA Dagger, and PA Crossers off the same backfield action. Layer in the screen game (HB Slip Screen, HB Mtn TE Mid Screen) and the wheel/shake package (HB Mtn Slot Wheel, HB Mtn Slot Shake) with the 3DRB tag personnel, and you have a set that can win with the back as a receiver when the defense commits to the trips side. The Gadget tag opens motion and misdirection options that most Shotgun sets in the same formation do not carry.
Read the number of defenders in the box before the snap: five or fewer means check Inside Zone or Same Side Zone, six or more means RPO Alert Bubble or a quick trips concept instead.
Against single-high man, go to Mesh Dagger or Mesh Whips and user the trips side, letting the mesh rub free the shallow while the dig sits behind the linebacker level.
Against Cover 2 or Cover 4, Mills and Mtn Mills are your best calls because the dig holds the safety and the post breaks behind him, especially if you hot route the flexed TE to clear the middle.
On third and medium, Mtn Stick and Shock H Option give you a leverage read on the option route, and blocking the back keeps you alive against the pressure that usually shows on that down.
Use HB Mtn Slot Wheel and HB Mtn Slot Shake after you have run the flood concepts twice, since the defense will be sitting on the flat and the wheel takes the top off from the same look.
