The outside receiver runs a deep vertical to clear out the cornerback and safety, while the TE or slot runs a dig underneath at roughly 12-15 yards, sitting down in the void left by the vertical route. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep corner and another works a shallow crosser underneath, giving you a second layer of answers if the primary side is capped. The play-action fake holds the linebackers for a beat, opening throwing lanes for the dig against zone or the seam window against man, and the primary read progression starts with the deep dig on the dagger side before working back to the corner route or checking down to the underneath crosser.

Defensive Reads

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in second and medium situations where defenses expect run action off Trio Y-Flex looks, since the play-action fake needs linebackers biting downhill to fully open the dig window.

Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth: if you see two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, that is your green light since this is a strong Cover 2 beater with the dig settling right behind the underneath zone defenders and in front of the deep half safety.

Against Cover 3, key the middle of field safety rotation and throw the dig quickly before the flat or curl defender can wall it off, since the vertical clears the deep third defender out of the throwing lane.

Hot route the shallow crosser into a hot read if you diagnose a blitz pre-snap, since it releases fast and gives you an outlet against pressure without needing the play-action fake to fully develop.
