PA Dagger out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex is a play-action pass built around the classic dagger combo on the play side, with a deep clear-out route and an underneath dig sitting behind it. Off the play-action fake, the outside receiver runs a vertical to clear the top of the defense while the seam/dig route sits underneath in the void, and the backside receiver runs a deep in-cut across the middle as an alternate answer. On the other side, a receiver runs a quick out while a shallow drag crosses underneath, giving you a five-man route concept that attacks both man and zone coverage with a clear vertical to horizontal progression. The primary read starts with the deep vertical clear-out to see how the safety reacts, then works down to the dig/seam sitting underneath, and finally checks the shallow drag as the outlet against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 3 shell, since this concept is tagged specifically as a beater for both. Watch the corners at the snap, if they bail into deep zone drops the underneath dig and drag will have soft grass to work with. Key the flow of the linebackers on the play-action fake, if they step up hard to defend the run the seam and dig routes will open up behind them immediately. Look for a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, a disciplined lurk can sink under the dig route and undercut the primary read. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness for this play, since the deep vertical route can win outside against tight man leverage. Fast blitzes off the edge with no play-action respect can force a quick check down to the shallow drag before the deeper routes fully develop.
Usage Tips
Use PA Dagger on early downs or in second and short situations where the play-action fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for a beat.
Check the safety depth pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the dagger concept is designed to sit the dig route right in the seam between them.
Against single high looks, key the middle linebacker and free safety, if they bite on the run fake the deep vertical route will be one on one for an explosive gain.
If the blitz shows pre-snap, hot route the shallow drag or use it as your quick outlet since the play-action drop takes extra time to develop.
Pair this with Mesh Dagger or Slot Seam from the same set so the defense cannot sit on the dagger read, alternating between the two keeps linebackers honest on the play-action fake.
