HB Quick Base is a designed dive run out of the Shotgun Trio Y-Flex 11 personnel set. The offensive line executes a base blocking scheme, with the fullback or lead blocker area kicking out to seal the point of attack while the interior linemen climb to the second level, and the HB takes the handoff and reads the dive lane between the guards. This is a straightforward run play designed to attack light boxes and gash defenses that are overloaded in coverage, with the primary read progression being the initial gap read on the play side guard, then bouncing outside if the backside cutback lane opens.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap since shallow, aggressive linebackers crashing downhill can be gashed if the HB presses the hole and cuts off blocks. Count the box pre-snap and if the defense has stacked eight or nine defenders near the line, this run is unlikely to succeed and you should audible to a pass concept instead. Look for defensive tackles shooting gaps on a slant call, since this can disrupt the interior blocking scheme and force a negative play if the HB does not adjust his path. This run struggles against gap-sound fronts with disciplined linebackers who stay square and read their keys instead of flowing hard to one side. Man coverage on the perimeter with safeties rotated into the box is the biggest deterrent, so if you see two safeties creeping down pre-snap, expect a quick, physical fit at the line of scrimmage.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and only run this into 6 or fewer men in the box for the best odds of a positive gain. Use play-action shots from this same formation like PA Dagger or PA Crossers after establishing this dive to keep linebackers honest and slow their run fits. On early downs in normal distance situations this is a great changeup call to keep defenses from selling out to stop the pass out of Trio Y-Flex. If the defense shows a stacked box or an obvious run blitz, bail out to RPO Zone Alert Omaha or RPO Alert Bubble from the same set to throw off the read. User the HB manually through the hole rather than relying purely on the CPU blocking logic, especially against aggressive defensive tackle stunts.
