HB Quick Base is a designed inside run out of the Shotgun Trio Y-Flex 11 personnel set. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down with the fullback/H-back kicking out to lead through the hole while the HB takes a quick handoff and hits the dive lane between the guards. This is a pure run play with no route combos shown, built to attack downhill gaps before the defense can flow and fill. The primary read is the HB's dive path off his blockers' initial leverage: he presses the line hard and reads the first level defenders to decide whether to cut inside or bounce off the double team.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the linebacker depth and alignment: stacked or crashing linebackers will fill the dive lane fast and shut this down. Watch for a light box (five or six defenders) which signals man or single-high coverage and gives the HB a clean crease to the second level. If the defense shows a nano blitz or overloaded front with defensive linemen slanting hard to one gap, this play is vulnerable since there is no cutback design shown in the blocking scheme. User-controlled defenders who key the mesh point and shoot gaps immediately can blow this up before the fullback lead block gets set. Against zone-heavy shells with linebackers reading run-pass keys and staying square, the dive still has value because it forces those linebackers downhill and sets up your play-action game later in the series.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want to keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy calls from this same formation. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box, this dive hits fast before linebackers can fill the gap. Pair it with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Omaha from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick perimeter throw off similar formation looks. Against stacked fronts or heavy blitz packages, consider hot routing or checking to a quick game pass like Curl Flat instead, since this dive lacks a bailout option if the interior gets clogged. Vary your play-action calls like PA Dagger or PA Crossers after establishing this run a few times to freeze linebackers and open up explosive shots downfield.
