Breakdown

Shock H Option is a pass play out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex that attacks the field with a three level stretch. The two receivers to the left run a skinny post and a dig underneath it, the receiver at the bottom of the formation releases into the option route out of the backfield with a stick to the flat, and the receiver on the right runs a corner route off a quick out breaking angle. The running back stays in to protect while the quarterback climbs the pocket, making this a man beater built on the option route creating natural separation against man leverage while the corner and post stretch the deep half. Primary read progression starts with the option route for the built in leverage win, then works to the dig, and finishes on the corner as the low to high answer against zone drop rotation.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the right side since a corner playing off suggests zone drop, which opens the dig behind him. Watch for the slot defender shading inside or outside on the option route side, since that alignment tells the option route which way to break. Post-snap, key on the flat or curl defender since a hard zone drop into the option route area signals Cover 3 or Cover 4, pushing the read to the corner route. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump the dig route, so be ready to climb the ladder to the corner if that happens. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner route, but disciplined zone coverage with a deep half safety rotating over can take away the vertical shot and force the checkdown.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or alignment checks to identify if the defense is showing man or zone before the snap, since the option route reads coverage differently against each shell.

Against man coverage, trust the option route to break away from the defender and get the ball out fast on the first read.

Against zone, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, look to the dig and corner combo on the right side since those routes work behind underneath defenders and in front of deep safeties.

This play pairs well with HB Mtn Slot Shake or Mtn Shock Slot Dig in the same set since both use similar formation looks but attack different levels, keeping defenders guessing on run fits and coverage rotation.

Best called on second or third and medium since the option route gives a built in checkdown while the deeper routes provide explosive play potential if the defense sells out on the underneath route.
