Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify safety depth and count defenders in the box, since a two high shell with soft corners invites the corner route behind the mesh while a single high shell suggests the seam route will draw more attention. Watch for a linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the mesh window post-snap, since a defender spying the crossers can jump the underneath routes and blow up the timing. Key the flat defender's reaction to the HB release, since if he sinks with the corner route or bites on the mesh, the check release into the flat is wide open. Man coverage with tight press corners gets exposed by the natural mesh pick, so look for trailing defenders getting rubbed off as the crossers work through the traffic. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the deep middle third or lurking underneath the corner route, since a smart user can rob the corner throw and force you back down to the mesh or check release.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to identify if the defense is showing man or zone before the snap, since the mesh crossers will pick off trailing defenders in man coverage almost every time.

If you see a Cover 2 shell with two deep safeties, look immediately to the corner route sitting behind the underneath mesh, since that soft spot between the flat defender and the safety is where this play wins.

Against Cover 3, work the mesh crossers quickly before the underneath zone defenders can settle, and use the deep seam route as a clear out to open the intermediate window.

Check the HB release first on any blitz look, since the check release into the flat is your answer versus pressure and gives you a quick outlet if the mesh takes time to develop.
