RPO Zone Alert Omaha is a true run-pass option out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex that gives you an inside zone run scheme paired with an alert pass concept off the boundary. The offensive line executes zone blocking rules for the HB run while the QB reads the box count and second level defenders to decide whether to hand off or pull and throw the alert route. Your primary read progression starts with the number of defenders in the box pre-snap, then post-snap you key the play side linebacker or safety flowing down to determine run versus throw, since a fast flow to the run triggers the pass side of the RPO.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard into the run gap immediately pull and throw the alert route behind him. Identify two high shells with soft corners playing off, this tells you zone coverage is likely sitting underneath and the alert throw has a clean window if the flow defender bites. Beware user controlled defenders sitting in a lurk spot near the alert route, aggressive human defenders will often abandon their zone assignment to jump the throw, so have a run alternative ready if you sense a jump. Man coverage with press corners and no safety help over the alert route is a green light to throw immediately off the snap read before the rush arrives. Heavy blitz packages with extra defenders in the box can outnumber the zone run blocking, so if you see six plus in the box with an overload to the play side, favor the pass option instead of forcing the handoff.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and if there are six or fewer defenders in the box lean toward the run side of the RPO since the numbers favor the zone scheme.
Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap because single high looks with an aggressive linebacker crashing down open up the alert throw almost every time.
Use hot routes to adjust the backside receiver into a quick out or slant against man coverage if you see a corner pressed and no help over the top.
This play pairs well with Inside Zone and RPO Alert Bubble in the same set since all three punish defenses that key run fits the same way, forcing the defense to guess between crashing linebackers or staying disciplined.
Best called on early downs in the run and pass balance range, second and short to second and medium, where defenses are still respecting standard run fits and have not sold out to stop the RPO look.
