Defensive Reads

Watch the depth of the linebacker or nickel defender lined up over the H-back, tight man coverage or blitz alignment signals the angle route will be open on the break. If the defense rotates to a two high shell post snap, the outside verticals become low value and the quarterback should be reading the angle route as the primary target regardless. User the middle linebacker or a rover defender to sit on the angle route crossing pattern, this is the single biggest counter to shutting down the concept. Zone coverage with a robber or lurk defender in the shallow middle will disrupt the angle route timing, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and take an outside vertical shot instead. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with man match principles on the slot receiver are the most vulnerable shells, while Cover 2 or Cover 4 with disciplined underneath zone drops give the defense the best chance to take away every level.

Usage Tips

Look pre-snap for single high safety looks since the two verticals on the outside can pull top coverage away from the angle route working underneath.

Key on the nickel or linebacker assigned to the H-back, if he is playing man coverage the angle route wins almost every time due to the sharp inside break.

Use this play on second or third and medium when you need a reliable man beater that does not require a deep shot to convert.

Pair this with Mtn Mills or Dagger from the same set so the defense has to respect verticals every snap, then come back to Slot Under H-Angle to attack aggressive man defenders.

If the defense shows zone shells, hot route the underneath crosser deeper to sit in the void between the flat and hook defenders instead of forcing the angle read.
