Mtn Shock Slot Dig lines up in Shotgun Trio Y-Flex with the slot receiver running pre-snap motion before settling as a shallow cross underneath. Post-snap, the outside receiver to the boundary runs a corner-post vertical up the numbers, the tight end works an out and up seam route on the far side that climbs vertically after breaking outside, and the inside receiver on that side sits down on a deep dig that cuts hard across the middle of the field. The lone running back releases to the flat for a checkdown option underneath. This is a man beater built to punish man coverage with the dig sitting down in the void and the corner route pulling the safety, with the primary read progression going dig to corner to flat checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of the linebacker or defender assigned to the motion man before the snap, if he mirrors the motion across the field you are facing man coverage and the dig will have room to work. Key the deep safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety struggles to help on both the dig and the corner route simultaneously so identify which one he is leaning towards. After the snap, track any user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat who can jump the dig route, if he stays put the throwing window closes quickly. Zone coverage with a strong flat defender can undercut the running back checkdown, so know that this play loses value against a solid Cover 3 sink from the linebackers. Watch for a cornerback playing off coverage on the corner route side, if he is squatting at intermediate depth he can bait a bad decision on that vertical shot route.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone coverage, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and the dig route becomes a live option immediately at the top of its break.

Attack single high safety shells since the dig route sits in the throwing lane that a lone deep safety cannot cover from depth while also respecting the corner route.

If you see two high safeties rotate down to a single high shell post snap, look to the corner route on the far side since the safety help over the top will be compromised.

Use this play on second and medium to third and long situations where the dig route distance matches the sticks and the corner route provides an explosive shot play option.

Pair this with Mtn Corner Y-drag or Mtn Mills earlier in a drive so defenders start jumping the dig, then hit the corner route deep for a big play once you have set up the tendency.
