Breakdown

Mtn Out H-Angle comes out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex with pre-snap motion sending the receiver across the formation before the snap. Post-snap, the outside receiver on the boundary runs a quick out breaking away from the formation, the inside slot pushes a vertical seam up the middle, and the backside receiver runs an angle route out of the backfield area that breaks outside then works back to a corner/out combination against the second level. This is a man beater built to attack matchups created by the pre-snap motion, with the angle route giving a natural hi-lo answer versus linebackers who bite on the flat, and the vertical seam serving as the window shot if the defense rotates a safety down to help on the motion man.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, key the corner and safety alignment to the motion side, if the defense shifts a linebacker or corner to match the motion man man to man you should sit on the angle route since it beats trailing defenders. Post-snap, watch for a linebacker sprinting to the flat to jump the out route, this leaves the angle route wide open working underneath toward the middle of the field. Identify the deep safety rotation, if the safety stays over the top on the vertical seam route the quarterback should reset to the angle or out route instead of forcing the seam window. Man coverage with underneath help is the biggest threat to this concept, a user lurking near the angle route can jump the break, so scan the flat and hook zones before committing to that throw. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops can clog the seam and angle routes, in that case the out route becomes the checkdown answer against a soft cushioned corner.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and the angle route becomes a high percentage answer against a linebacker in space.

Attack the angle route out of the backfield against Cover 3 and Cover 1 sitting linebackers, it beats short zone drops and creates natural rub separation against man defenders trailing from depth.

Take the vertical seam shot when you see single high safety alignment with the corner playing off the outside out route, this is the explosive play answer versus zone if the seam defender widens.

Pair this play with Mtn Corner Y-drag and Mtn Corner Slot Choice in the same set so the defense has to respect both the angle concept and the drag/corner combo, keeping linebackers honest on run fits and pass drops.

Best called on second and medium or third and short where the quick out and angle combo can pick up the sticks immediately, and effective off run heavy tendencies since Inside Zone lives in the same set.
