Breakdown

Dagger from Shotgun Trio Y-Flex is a classic vertical pass concept built to attack zone shells with a clear high low read on one side of the field. Off the diagram, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical clear route while the inner slot receiver runs the signature dagger dig, pushing vertically before breaking flat across the middle underneath the clear out. On the other side, the TE runs a shallow drag/cross underneath while the boundary receiver runs a hard out at the sticks, giving you a second read option away from the primary combo. The primary read progression starts with the dig against the vacated middle void created by the vertical clear, then works to the drag/cross if the dig window is taken away, making this a strong zone beater with man beater upside if the corner locks and gets picked by the clear route.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1, since the clear route occupies the deep defender and opens the intermediate dig window. Watch for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field, they can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Check linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink quickly into the throwing lane it signals a Tampa 2 or Cover 4 shell designed to take away the dig. Cover 2 with soft corners can be exploited since the underneath drag route sits in the void behind the flat defender and in front of the deep half safety. Beware of a nano blitz or interior pressure package sent up the middle, since the dig route needs time to develop, so a hot route adjustment to the flat or drag may be necessary against aggressive blitz looks.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the middle of the field safety alignment, if you see a single high safety this is a great indicator the dig window will be open against Cover 3 or Cover 1.

Use this on early downs or second and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than bring pressure.

Hot route the flat out route into a flat if you see man coverage on the boundary side to create a quick option against blitz looks.

Pair this call with Mesh Dagger or PA Dagger in your play calling sequence, since both look identical pre-snap but attack different levels, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their drop reads.

Watch the underneath linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow expect them to sink under the dig, so be ready to progress quickly to the drag route on the opposite side.
