Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex is a pure zone run play with the RB aligned offset behind the QB and the offensive line executing a zone blocking scheme that flows to the playside gap. The diagram shows the three receivers to the left running off routes to clear space and hold defenders vertically, while the tight end and remaining backs stay in to help seal the edge, leaving the interior blockers to work double teams up to the second level. This is a zone beater designed to attack light boxes, and the primary read progression for the running back is backside cutback, then playside bend, then bounce outside if the alley is clean.
Defensive Reads
Read the Mike linebacker flow at the snap since his first step tells you which gap the defense is filling. Watch for safeties creeping down into the box pre-snap, which signals run blitz or a heavy front designed to stuff inside zone. This play struggles against gap-control 4-3 fronts with disciplined linebackers who stay home and scrape to the cutback lane. It beats overloaded man coverage looks and single high safety shells where the second level is thin due to receivers pulling coverage vertically. Post-snap, track the backside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down the line, since a quick cutback beats hard playside pursuit every time.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 men in the box or fewer for the best odds of success. Use the three vertical releases to occupy corners and safeties in man coverage, which naturally widens run lanes if the defense is playing off man. Motion the flex TE or a receiver across formation to identify man versus zone based on whether a defender follows. Pair this with RPO Zone Alert Omaha and RPO Alert Bubble from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run without exposing bubble and alert throws. Best used on early downs (first and ten, second and short) to stay ahead of the sticks and keep play calling balanced.
