Mtn Slot In lines up out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex with a Motion tag that sends the inside slot receiver across pre-snap. At the snap, both outside receivers and the flexed TE push vertical seams up the field while the motioned receiver runs a quick in-cut over the middle for a quick underneath option, and the RB releases out of the backfield on a wheel route up the sideline. The three vertical stems stretch the defense deep while the in-route and wheel give the quarterback high-low answers underneath, making this a man beater that also stresses zone defenders who have to choose between the verticals and the flat-to-wheel combo. The primary read starts with the slot in-cut against man coverage, then progresses to the wheel route if a linebacker or safety jumps the shallow crosser, working back to the verticals if the defense drops deep and leaves the middle soft.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot defender at the snap. If he chases the motion across the field, it confirms man coverage and you should sit on the wheel and in-cut for easy completions. Check safety depth pre-snap. Two high safeties suggest Cover 2 or Cover 4, meaning the verticals will draw coverage but the in-cut window stays open underneath. Post-snap, track the linebacker responsible for the flat or curl zone. If he sinks to cover the in-cut, that opens a passing lane for the wheel route up the sideline. This play struggles against aggressive zone blitzes where a linebacker jumps the in-cut route immediately, since it removes the first read and forces a quick progression to the wheel or verticals. Beware of Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating down, since that defender can sit on the intermediate in-cut and bait a turnover if the quarterback does not see the rotation.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone: if the defender follows the motioned receiver across the formation, you know you are getting man coverage and should prioritize the in-cut and wheel combo.
Against zone shells with deep safeties, look to the three vertical routes to occupy the deep defenders and hit the in-cut in the honey hole before linebackers can sink under it.
This play works best on 2nd or 3rd and medium when you need a chain-moving underneath option but still want to keep the safeties honest with verticals.
Pair this play with Mtn Corner Y-drag or Mtn Stick from the same set so the defense cannot key on the motion or the in-cut every snap, forcing them to respect multiple concepts off identical formation looks.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep help, hot route the wheel to a flat route to shorten the developing route against a zone drop underneath.
