HB Mtn Slot Wheel motions a slot receiver across the formation pre-snap, then sends him on a deep wheel route up the sideline once the ball is snapped, working off the initial drag action to sell the flat first. On the left side the outside receiver runs a deep out while the inner receivers cross with a slant and a dig underneath, and on the right the TE releases into the flat before the HB or motion man wheels vertically up the numbers. This is a man beater built to exploit man coverage on the wheel route since the underneath crossing traffic creates natural rub picks, and the primary read progression starts with the wheel route matchup on the outside, checks down to the flat route if the wheel is capped, and finishes with the crossing routes underneath if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if a linebacker or slot defender shadows the motion man across the formation, that is a clear man coverage tell and opens up the wheel route as your top target. Watch the flat defender on the right side after the snap, if he sinks with the TE release instead of widening, the wheel route has a clean lane up the sideline. Against zone coverage, key the underneath crossing routes on the left since the slant and dig combo creates natural conflict for linebackers dropping into their zones. Look for a deep safety rotating toward the wheel side post-snap, this signals a coverage shell like Cover 2 or Cover 3 that can take away the wheel and force you to check down. Beware disguised blitzes off the edge on the wheel side, since a hard corner blitz can beat the wheel route to the flat and disrupt the timing before the route develops.
Usage Tips
Motion the slot receiver before the snap and watch the defense to see if a linebacker or safety follows him across the formation, that confirms man coverage and tells you the wheel route is live.
If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, expect the wheel to get help over the top, so be ready to work the underdrag or dig route on the left side instead.
Use hot routes to convert the flat route into a shallow drag if you are getting a hard corner blitz off the edge, this gives your quarterback a quick answer against pressure.
