Breakdown

HB Mtn Slot Wheel motions the slot receiver across the formation pre-snap, then releases him on a wheel route out of the backfield area toward the sideline and up the numbers, giving you a coverage indicator plus a home run shot off the motion. On the backside, three receivers cross the field on a mesh style combo with a deep corner route climbing outside and two underneath crossers occupying linebackers and shallow zone defenders, while the TE runs a corner breaking route up the seam and the flat back releases into an angle route underneath. This is a man beater built around the wheel matchup created by motion, so your primary read starts with the wheel route if you see man coverage or a blown assignment, then progresses to the TE corner route against zone drops and finally down to the flat and crossers as checkdown options.

Defensive Reads

Watch the motion man pre-snap, if a defender mirrors him across the formation that is a strong man coverage indicator and tells you the wheel route will win down the sideline. Identify single high versus two high safety alignment before the snap, single high with man underneath is the ideal shell for this concept while two high shells with sound zone drops can take away the wheel and force you into the TE corner or checkdowns. Post-snap, key the flat defender and outside linebacker, if they sink with the wheel route or get picked off by the crossing traffic underneath, the TE corner route behind them becomes the go to answer. Beware of user controlled defenders sitting in a deep zone or lurking the flat, since a heads up user can rob the wheel route or jump the TE corner if they anticipate the concept. Cover 3 and cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops and no busted assignments on the motion man are the toughest defense for this play, since the crossers and wheel both get squeezed into tight throwing windows.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone, if a linebacker or safety follows the motion man across the formation you have a clean man read and should snap immediately to the wheel route down the sideline.

Against zone shells, hold the wheel as a decoy to pull the flat defender and instead work the TE corner route breaking outside, since the underneath crossers will occupy the linebacker level and open the seam window.

This play excels on early downs and in play-action heavy sequences, run it after establishing HB Mtn Slot Shake or Mtn Corner Slot Choice so defenders start jumping motion and shallow crossers, opening the wheel for explosive gains.

Best used on second and short to medium distance where defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage or blitz, since the wheel route punishes both a chasing corner and a blitzing linebacker vacating coverage responsibility.

If the user drops a defender into a deep third or lurks the sideline, check down quickly to the flat angle route or the shallow crosser rather than forcing the wheel into a safety over the top.
