Mills out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex is a classic post-dig combo built to attack Cover 4 and other zone shells. The backside X runs a deep post while the inside receiver runs a dig underneath it, creating a natural high-low seam read on any safety trying to rob the post. Underneath, the slot receiver runs a spot/hitch and the flex TE releases to the flat, giving the quarterback a built-in checkdown against man coverage or blitz looks, with the RB releasing to the boundary flat as a screen valve. The primary read progression starts with the post to dig window, then works down to the flat route if the safety sits on top of the dig.
Defensive Reads
Read the deep safety pre-snap, if he is aligned in the middle of the field expect Cover 3 or Cover 1 and the post has a good chance to split the safety. Post-snap, key the safety over the dig receiver, if he sinks with the post you have a clean throwing window to the dig route. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking in the intermediate middle zone, a smart user will sit in the dig window and jump the throw. Against Cover 4, the post should stress the deep quarter defender while the dig sits in the void behind the linebackers, so patience on the drop is key. If the defense shows blitz with linebackers crashing downhill, get to the flat route or RB checkdown immediately since the post and dig take too long to develop.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify single-high versus two-high safety alignment before the ball is snapped since this concept is designed to punish four-across zone shells.
If you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, consider hot routing the dig to a corner route to attack off man leverage.
Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is likely to sit in Cover 4 or Cover 2 zone drops.
Pair this call with Mtn Mills or PA Dagger later in a drive so the defense has to respect both the post-dig shot and the play action shot off similar formation and route stems.
Watch the flat route and RB release as your answer against pressure looks, dumping it off quickly if the interior protection breaks down.
