Mtn Out N Up is a motion-based man beater out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex with 11 personnel. Pre-snap motion brings the slot receiver across to the outside numbers where he runs a quick out and up the sideline, while the outside receiver on that side clears vertically off the snap on a corner-post style out and up as well, stacking two vertical threats to attack a single cornerback. On the backside, the receiver runs an out breaking route and the inline tight end runs a shallow drag underneath, with the running back releasing on a flat route to the opposite side as a checkdown and outlet against blitz pressure. The primary read progression starts with the out and up on the motion side for the explosive shot, then works down to the backside out route, and finally to the flat and drag as underneath safety valves.
Defensive Reads
This play is designed to torch man coverage, especially press man or man match shells where the cornerback has to respect the out route before flipping his hips for the up route. Straight zone coverage like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with disciplined deep defenders can take away the out and up since the corner and safety can sit on the route and squeeze the sideline together. Watch for a user controlled safety rotating late to double the out and up route, that lurk defender is the biggest threat to blowing up the deep shot. Pre-snap, check the cornerback's alignment on the motion side, if he stays locked in man and does not get help over the top the deep ball is live. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers, if they sink hard into the drag or flat window it confirms zone coverage and you should hitch on the backside out route instead of forcing the deep shot.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man coverage, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a clean man beater matchup to attack deep. Hot route the flat route running back into a check release if you are facing a heavy blitz look so you have extra protection versus five or six man pressure. Call this on second and long or third and medium to long situations where defenses are more likely to play man across the board and bite on underneath routes. Pair this with Mtn Corner Slot Choice or Mtn Slot In earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect quick underneath throws, then hit them with the out and up double move for the big play. Watch the cornerback's leverage before the snap, if he is playing outside leverage the out and up window opens faster since he has to recover to the sideline.
