Slot Seam out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex is a five man route concept built around a vertical seam shot from the inside slot receiver. The backside runs a deep corner route from the outside receiver with a shallow crosser underneath it, while the frontside stacks a corner route from the Y-Flex tight end over an angle route out of the backfield from the running back, and the seam breaks straight up the middle of the field between the two levels. This is a man beater first and foremost, since the seam route is designed to split the difference between a linebacker and safety in man coverage while the corner routes on both sides isolate defensive backs on vertical stems. The primary read progression starts with the seam route as the pre determined shot play, then works to the backside corner and shallow cross combo if the middle of the field is capped, before checking down to the running back's angle route as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Check the middle linebacker's depth at the snap, since a shallow drop or blitz look means the seam route will be wide open against man or single high looks. Identify the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shell tells you the seam route has one defender to beat over the top while two high safeties means the seam will likely get help from a deep half defender. Watch for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate seam window, since a smart user can jump the seam route and turn it into a pick six if you throw it late. Read the cornerback's press or off alignment on both outside receivers, tight press coverage favors the corner routes beating man leverage while off coverage means the shallow cross underneath will be there faster. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the running back's angle route becomes the checkdown that beats pressure when the seam and corner routes take too long to develop.

Usage Tips

Take the seam shot immediately if you see man coverage or a single high safety shell, since the linebacker will not have the speed to stay on top of it. Use this play in second and long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to play zone coverage that opens passing lanes for the corner routes. If the defense shows two high safeties pre snap, look to the backside shallow cross underneath the corner route since that soft spot in zone tends to open up against split safety shells. Pair this play with Mtn Mills or Mesh Dagger in your play calling sequence, since those concepts attack similar areas but with different route timing, forcing the defense to respect both the vertical seam shot and the intermediate crossers. Hot route the running back's angle route to a flat route if you expect a blitz, giving yourself a quick outlet against pressure looks.
