HB Mtn Slot Shake is a motion-based route concept out of Shotgun Trio Y-Flex that uses a shake route from the slot along with crossing routes from the boundary to attack man and zone coverage. The diagram shows the boundary receiver running an out and up (corner) while the inner receiver runs a shallow drag underneath that turns into an out breaking route near the sideline, with the shake defender (red route) cutting sharply upfield after an initial jab step to create separation. On the right side, the flex tight end releases vertically before breaking outside on a deep out, while the flanker underneath runs an angle route out to the flat, giving the quarterback a two level read with a deep shot and an underneath outlet. The primary read progression starts with the shake route working against man leverage, then works to the corner or deep out breaking route on the boundary side if the shake gets squeezed, and finishes with the flat angle route as the checkdown against pressure or zone drops.
Watch for a defender shadowing the motion man across the formation before the snap, which confirms man coverage and tells the offense the shake route is live. Key the flat foot corner on the boundary side, since a corner who sits at the line without bailing is likely playing man and will get beat by the shake or the deep out breaking route. Read linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers will struggle to cover the underneath drag and angle route combination, opening up easy completions in zone coverage. Identify two high safety shells before the snap, since a defense sitting in a two deep shell is more vulnerable to the vertical routes from the tight end and boundary receiver working behind underneath defenders. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the shake route, since a smart user will jump the initial route and force the quarterback to progress to the deep out or angle route checkdown.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone coverage before the snap, since the defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you the shake route should win immediately off the jab step.
Target the shake route on third and short or in the red zone when defenders are playing tight man technique, since the sharp direction change is designed to shake off press or bump coverage at the line.
If you see a two high safety shell, work your eyes to the deep out or corner route on the boundary side since those routes stretch zone defenders vertically and horizontally at the same time.
Hot route the flex tight end into a quick option or hitch if you diagnose a blitz look, since his vertical release can be adjusted into a fast throw against extra rushers.
Pair this play with Mtn Corner Slot Choice or Mtn Shock Slot Dig in your play calling sequence, since the shake motion look sets up similar formations and forces the defense to respect both quick game and vertical shots off identical pre-snap picture.
