Overview

Empty HB Wide is a five receiver Shotgun set built from 11 personnel. The quarterback is alone in the backfield, and the halfback is flexed out wide instead of lining up next to him. Other Shotgun sets keep the back in the box as a pass protector or run threat. This one spreads all five eligible receivers across the field and forces the defense to declare its coverage before the snap. With the tight end and three wideouts joining the flexed back, you get a true empty look without subbing in extra receivers. That keeps your 3DRB and SLWR packages on the field and lets you disguise empty as a standard 11 personnel call.

The main matchup advantage is the halfback split out wide. Defenses in base or nickel will often have a linebacker or safety travel with him in man coverage. A shifty third down back running option routes or quick breaking patterns against a linebacker is one of the most reliable mismatches in Madden. The tight end is usually aligned in a detached or slot position, which isolates him on the seam against a safety or linebacker. That opens Hoss Y Juke and Under Seams as clean ways to attack the middle of the field.

The play list leans toward quick game and vertical stretch concepts. Quick Slants, Stick, Stick N Nod, Double Ins, and Curl Flats give you fast answers against pressure and soft zone. Bronco Seams, Bronco DBL Dig, and Redzone Up attack deep and intermediate windows. Jailbreak Slot Screen and RPO Q Stick Draw add constraint plays so the defense cannot pin its ears back. Shock WR Option carries the Gadget tag, giving you a trick element that punishes aggressive users.

Strengths

Five eligible receivers force the defense to show its coverage pre snap, so reading man versus zone by alignment and motion is easier than in almost any other set.
The flexed 3DRB creates a linebacker mismatch in man coverage, and option style routes plus quick outs from the back become near automatic man beaters.
Stick, Stick N Nod, and Curl Flats give layered zone beaters that high low the flat defender against Cover 3 and Cover 4, and Stick N Nod punishes users jumping the stick route.
Bronco Seams and Under Seams put four verticals on Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells and overload the deep safety, especially with the tight end seam hot routed or left as is.
RPO Q Stick Draw and Jailbreak Slot Screen punish defenses that drop eight or bring the edge, keeping light boxes and aggressive pass rushes honest.

Weaknesses

There is no running back in protection, so a sixth rusher or a well timed nano blitz off the edge usually gets home before intermediate routes like Bronco DBL Dig can develop.
The run game is almost nonexistent apart from the QB draw RPO, which lets defenses play dime and drop extra defenders without fearing the ground game.
Skilled users sitting in the hook or middle read zone can undercut Quick Slants, Double Ins, and Stick throws, since the quick game funnels throws into predictable windows.
Cover 2 Man and Cover 4 Drop with outside leverage shadings take away the seams and outside breaks, forcing you into checkdowns with no back underneath.
Heavy use of empty becomes a tendency, and opponents will pre set pressure packages as soon as the halfback motions or aligns wide.

Usage Tips

Before the snap, motion the slot receiver or the flexed halfback across the formation. If a defender follows, it is man, so check to Shock WR Option or Quick Slants. If the defense shifts without following, attack zone with Stick or Curl Flats.

Against an obvious Cover 0 or loaded box on third and short, audible to Quick Slants or Jailbreak Slot Screen and get the ball out before the unblocked rusher arrives.

When the defense shows a single high safety on second and long, call Bronco Seams and read the middle of field safety, throwing opposite his leaning shoulder. Hot routing the halfback to a flat gives you a safe checkdown.

If opponents start dropping extra defenders or playing dime against empty, call RPO Q Stick Draw and keep the QB draw when the box shows five or fewer defenders.

In the red zone, Redzone Up and Hoss Y Juke create isolation fades and option routes. Put your best contested catch receiver at the single receiver side and consider slide protecting toward the blitz side.
