Empty HB Wide is Shotgun's five-wide look built out of 11 personnel, meaning your back is split out wide rather than sitting next to the quarterback. That single alignment change is what separates it from the rest of the Shotgun tree: there is no check release, no chip help, no draw threat from the backfield. Every eligible is on the line of scrimmage or in the slot, and the defense has to declare its coverage rotation immediately or leave someone uncovered. Because the halfback is the widest man to one side, you get a running back matched on a corner or a nickel defender in space, which is exactly the mismatch you want when your HB carries elite speed and route running.
The set spreads out to a 3x2 shell with the halfback isolated on the boundary, and the play art leans heavily on quick game and vertical stem concepts. Bronco Seams and Under Seams attack the middle of Cover 3 and Cover 2 with multiple seam runners flooding the deep hole. Bronco DBL Dig and Double Ins are your intermediate man beaters that carve up Cover 1 when the safety cheats to a single side. Stick, Curl Flats, Quick Slants, and Hoss Y Juke give you the West Coast rhythm throws that punish any blitz look, since your hot answer is already built into the concept. Shock WR Option and Stick N Nod are the pure isolation reads, letting you put your best route runner on an island and win on leverage.
What makes Empty HB Wide dangerous in Madden specifically is the pre-snap information. Five spread eligibles force the defense to show man or zone before the snap, and motioning the HB across the formation tells you instantly whether a defender travels. From there you have Jailbreak Slot Screen as a blitz punisher and RPO Q Stick Draw as your one true run threat, which keeps aggressive users from teeing off on every snap. The tradeoff is obvious: no back means no protection help, so your reads have to be fast and your pre-snap slide protection has to be right.
Motion the halfback across the formation before the snap to diagnose coverage, then check to Quick Slants or Stick if a defender follows and you confirm man, or hit Bronco Seams if nobody travels and you read single high zone.
Use this set on third and medium between five and eight yards, where Stick, Curl Flats, and Hoss Y Juke all give you a route breaking right at the sticks against both man and zone.
Set slide protection toward the pressure side before every snap and hot route the boundary receiver to a slant as your safety valve, since you have no back to release into the flat.
Save Jailbreak Slot Screen for when your opponent has shown two or more all out blitzes, and run it out of the same alignment you used for Bronco DBL Dig so the look is identical.
Call RPO Q Stick Draw on second and short to keep the defense honest, then come back to Stick N Nod on the same down and distance once they start crashing the box on the draw read.
Against Cover 3 with a robber user in the middle, go to Under Seams and target the outside seam runner away from the user, or work the boundary isolation on Shock WR Option instead.
