Double Ins is an Empty backfield concept out of Shotgun 11 personnel that isolates two dig routes over the middle of the field. Both the inside slot receiver and the tight end sit down on in-breaking routes at different depths, creating a natural high low read on any linebacker or zone defender sitting in the middle of the field. The backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field while the two outside receivers clear vertically with a go route and a deep crossing route, stretching the field and opening up the underneath ins against man or zone coverage. Primary progression starts with the shorter in route, then works to the deeper dig, and finally checks down to the shallow crosser if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sprints to the deep in route zone drop is confirmed and you should reset to the shallow in or the drag. Key the strong safety alignment before the snap, a safety sitting inside the numbers signals a Cover 3 buzz that will jump the deeper in route. If you see a nickel or slot corner press at the line, expect man coverage underneath and the double in concept will win against off man leverage on both dig routes. Identify blitz packages by watching the linebackers crash downhill immediately after the snap, this opens a natural throwing lane on the shallow drag since the box is vacated. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can undercut both in routes if the corners sink into the flat, so check the drag route as a hot outlet against this shell.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium to third and medium when you expect a zone shell since the two in routes settle into the honey hole against Cover 3 and Cover 4.
Read the middle linebacker before the snap, if he is sitting at 5 to 7 yards depth expect the shallow in to be taken away, so prioritize the deeper dig route.
Against man coverage, hot route the shallow drag into a speed out or send it on a corner route to stress a lurking safety and create separation for the deeper in.
Pair this play with Bronco DBL Dig and Bronco Seams in your call sheet so defenses cannot key on route depth or route direction after seeing similar splits.
If the defense shows two high safeties pre snap, throw the deeper in with anticipation before the safety can rotate down and undercut the throw.
