On the boundary side, the outside receiver runs a vertical clear-out while the inside slot works a stick nod, sitting down and settling before angling back to the flat, and the two receivers to the field stack a corner-post and a shallow drag underneath. The play is a classic man beater built on the stick concept, using the nod to freeze underneath defenders while the vertical routes stretch the field, so the primary read starts with the stick nod in the flat before working outside to the vertical route if the nod gets jumped.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or rolling to single high, since single high alignments leave the vertical routes on both sides matched up favorably against man coverage. Watch cornerback press versus off coverage at the snap, tight press invites the nod route to work underneath while off coverage opens a window for the quick out or drag. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow flat or hovering as a lurk defender, since that player is reading the stick nod and can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down. Zone coverage with linebackers dropping to intermediate depth can take away the nod, so be ready to climb the progression to the vertical or drag route if the underneath zone clogs the middle. Fire zone or nano blitz packages that bring an extra rusher off the edge can disrupt the timing of the nod, so recognize pressure indicators and get the ball out early on the quick option.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for single high versus two high safety alignment since the vertical routes on both edges punish single high shells that lack deep help. Use the stick nod as your first hot read against blitz looks because it settles quickly and gives you a rhythm throw before pressure arrives. If the defense shows man coverage with a corner playing tight outside leverage, look immediately to the vertical route for a big play opportunity.
