Hoss Y Juke lines up out of Shotgun Empty HB Wide, spreading five eligible receivers across the formation with no back in the backfield. The outside receivers on both sides run vertical go routes, the inside slot receiver on the right runs a seam up the middle, and the tight end runs a quick hitch just outside the tackle box, while the lone inside blocker steps up to pick up any rushers. This is a classic Four Verts and Cover 2 or Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progressing from the seam route against a two-high shell to the outside go routes if the safeties widen, working back down to the hitch as the built-in checkdown against soft coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to one high, since that dictates whether the seam or the outside verts will be open first. Watch for corners playing off coverage at the snap, which signals zone drops and opens a throwing window on the seam route before the safety can rotate over. If the defense shows a Cover 2 shell with cornerbacks jamming at the line, expect the seam to split the safeties down the middle, but watch for a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in that throwing lane. Man coverage with press corners on the outside can be attacked with hard-cut releases on the go routes, but a blitzing defense with no deep safety help can force the quarterback to dump it to the tight end hitch quickly. Beware of a Cover 3 sky or buzz call where a linebacker or safety drops into the deep middle third, since that defender can undercut the seam route and turn it into a turnover.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for two safeties splitting the middle of the field, since that tells you the seam route to the inside slot will be the primary target versus Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.
Against single-high safety looks like Cover 3 or Cover 1, prioritize the outside go routes since the deep defenders have more ground to cover and the flood on the seam and vertical stresses the boundary corner.
Use the tight end hitch as your emergency outlet against a heavy blitz or when the pocket collapses quickly, since it settles underneath and gives a rhythm throw before the four verts fully develop.
Pair this play with Curl Flats or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a vertical shot and a quick underneath rhythm passing attack.
Best called on second or third and medium to long distance when you need to stress a defense vertically, especially in two minute drill situations where explosive plays matter.
