Overview
Stack HB WK is a Shotgun 11 personnel set built around a two receiver stack to one side with the halfback offset to the weak side of the formation. That HB alignment is the whole point: it declares the run and toss strength opposite the stack, which forces the defense to either overload the weak side and surrender numbers to the stacked pair, or play balanced and let you attack the perimeter with Toss Wk and Mtn Outside Zone. Unlike standard Shotgun sets where the back sits directly behind the QB and gives the defense no directional tell, this set gives you an intentional tell you can weaponize with the fake toss series.
Strengths
- The stack alignment kills press man and jam coverage because the outside defender cannot get clean hands on the inside stacked receiver, making Double Corner and Fade Out premium man beaters
- Curl Flat and Curl Switch out of a stack create natural rub action at the release point, so defenders in Cover 1 and 2 Man get picked off without you needing to motion anything
- Fk Toss Post Sit and Fk Toss Cross punish any user who commits a linebacker or safety to the weak side flow, giving you a free crosser behind a vacated second level
- Triple screen menu (HB Slip Screen, PA Jailbreak Screen, RPO Zone Alert Screen, RPO Power Alert Screen) means you have four different answers to heavy blitz pressure from one set, and the RPO alerts let you read the box post snap
- Bench Switch and Mtn Divide give you clean Cover 3 and Cover 4 beaters, with Divide attacking the seams and Bench attacking the sideline void between the corner and flat defender
Weaknesses
- The offset weak side back leaves the strong side A gap and B gap thinner in protection, so overload blitzes to the stack side can get home before the fade or corner route develops
- Stacked receivers are easy to bracket: a user can drop a safety over the stack and effectively double both routes with one pre snap adjustment
- The run game is directionally predictable since Toss Wk and Mtn Outside Zone both attack the same side the back is aligned to, and good opponents will flow their user linebacker at the snap
- Only one tight end and a single back means no true power run answer against 4 3 or 3 4 base looks in short yardage
- Heavy play action inventory (Mtn PA Shot, PA Jailbreak Screen, Fk Toss series) means long developing plays that die instantly to interior nano pressure if you have not blocked the mug looks
Usage Tips
Read the defender over the stack pre snap: if he is inside shaded with outside leverage help, run Double Corner or Fade Out, and if he is pressed outside, hot route the inside stacked receiver to a slant or drag for the free inside release
Alternate Toss Wk and Fk Toss Cross from the same look on early downs so the opponent's user linebacker cannot commit weak side without paying for it
Use RPO Zone Alert Screen and RPO Power Alert Screen against blitz heavy opponents on second and medium, reading the alley defender and dumping the screen the moment you see numbers in the box
Motion the outside stacked receiver across the formation to confirm man or zone, then check to Curl Flat against zone or Curl Switch against man since the switch release gives you the rub
Save Mtn PA Shot and Bench Switch for after you have established the weak side run, ideally on second and short when the opponent is in a run committed single high shell
