RPO Zone Alert Screen is a run-pass option built off inside zone action from the Shotgun Stack HB WK formation, giving the quarterback a pre-snap and post-snap alert to bail into a screen if the zone run is outnumbered at the line. The blocking scheme sends the offensive line into zone run steps while a screen alert (typically to the HB or a stacked receiver) develops on the perimeter, letting the QB read second level defenders to decide whether to hand off or pull and throw. This is a zone beater by design since it punishes linebackers who flow hard downhill or fast fill on the run fake, and the primary read progression is box count first, then flowing linebacker leverage second, then the screen window itself once the QB commits to the pass side.
Pre-snap, identify safety alignment since two-high shells with soft corners usually mean light boxes that favor the run side of the RPO. Check linebacker depth and blitz indicators, since walked-up or blitzing linebackers open the screen lane but also close run gaps fast. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender spying the screen or lurking in the flat, since a smart user player can jump the route and blow up the alert screen for a big loss. Man coverage with aggressive underneath defenders reading run action first will get gashed by the screen since they flow hard and lose leverage on the alert receiver. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebackers who stay square are the best defense against this play since they can play both run and pass without overcommitting.
Count the box pre-snap and only trust the run side if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, otherwise plan to pull the ball immediately.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap since stacked or blitzing linebackers are a green light to throw the screen since they will vacate the alert zone in a hurry.
Use this play on early downs (first or second and medium) so either outcome, run or screen, keeps you ahead of the sticks without forcing a low-percentage throw.
