PA Jailbreak Screen is a play-action screen pass out of the Shotgun Stack HB WK formation designed to punish aggressive pass rushers and linebackers who bite on the run fake. The offensive line sells run blocking before releasing to lead the way for the HB screen, while the play-action element freezes second level defenders and clears throwing lanes. This is a screen pass at its core, but the PA dressing makes it a strong counter to nano blitzes and edge pressure packages. Primary read progression starts with the HB screen as the first read, with the QB going through the fake before immediately turning to find the pulling linemen and get the ball out to the back in space.
Key the defensive ends and outside linebackers immediately after the snap since disciplined edge defenders who stay home on the screen side can blow this play up before it develops Look for man coverage across the board pre-snap, since corners in man will often bite on the play-action fake and vacate the screen lane Identify blitz packages and nano blitz indicators before the snap, since bringing extra rushers on a called blitz almost always guarantees the screen beats it clean Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in a lurk zone near the line, since a smart user can jump the screen route and blow up the timing Check linebacker depth at the snap, since linebackers who stay shallow and read run keys instead of dropping into coverage lanes will get caught out of position when the screen releases
Call this play on early downs or third and short when the defense has shown a tendency to bring pressure or crash the edge on run fakes
Watch pre-snap for stacked boxes, blitz indicators, or defenders creeping toward the line since these are green lights for the screen to hit big
Use this as a changeup after running Mtn Outside Zone or Toss Wk from the same set so the defense respects the run action and bites harder on the fake
Avoid calling this against disciplined zone teams that keep linebackers at home, since spy or scrape technique defenders can sit on the screen and blow it up
Hot route the backside WR into a quick slant or drag if you see man coverage across the board to give yourself a bailout option if the screen is covered
