Fk Toss Cross is a fake toss play-action concept out of Shotgun Stack HB WK that punishes defenses keying on the run fake. The play sells a toss action to the flat before working into crossing routes that stretch the field horizontally, creating natural separation against man coverage as receivers cross paths and rub off defenders. The primary read progression starts with the underneath crosser working from the boundary side, then bounces to the deeper crossing route breaking opposite, with the HB check down as a late outlet if the pocket collapses or both crossers are covered.
Read the linebacker depth immediately after the snap. If they bite hard on the toss fake and flow toward the sideline, the crossing routes will be wide open behind them. Watch for a lurking user defender sitting in the middle of the field. A smart user will abandon the run fake and sit in the passing lanes to jump the crossing routes, so have a check down ready. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with aggressive linebackers get gashed hardest by this play since the crossers exploit the vacated middle of the field once the linebackers commit to the run fake. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who stay in their zone drops can shut this down by squeezing the crossing routes and forcing a checkdown to the HB. Look for a defensive end or overhang crashing down hard on the fake toss motion, since that same aggression on defense usually signals blitz packages that will need a hot route or quick check to the crosser to beat pressure.
Use this on early downs, first and second and short to medium, when the defense has shown a tendency to bite on run fakes or crash linebackers on toss action.
Check the safety alignment before the snap. Single high shells with linebackers sitting tight in the box are prime targets since the play action freezes them and opens the crossing lanes underneath.
Hot route the shallow crosser into a drag if you are facing heavy man coverage with a slot corner, since the natural pick action against man defenders creates easy YAC opportunities.
Pair this play with Toss Wk and Mtn Outside Zone earlier in a series so the defense respects the actual toss and bites harder on the fake, then hit them with Fk Toss Cross once you see linebackers stepping up on run reads.
Against zone heavy defenses, layer this with Curl Switch or Double Corner in your play calling script so linebackers stay honest and cannot sit on the crossing routes.
