Mtn PA Shot is a play-action shot play out of the Shotgun Stack HB WK set designed to attack downfield after selling a mountain (outside zone) run fake. The stacked WR alignment creates natural traffic to spring the top receiver deep while underneath routes hold linebackers and flat defenders on the run fake. This is a man beater at its core, using the stack to rub off press corners and create a clean vertical release, though the deep shot also stresses single high zone shells if the safety bites on the run action. The primary read progression starts with the deep shot route off the stack release, then works down to the intermediate crosser or dig as the second read, and finally checks down to the flat or HB leak if the shot is covered.
Identify the safety alignment before the snap, single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 are where this play hits hardest because the play-action freeze pulls the extra defender toward the box. Watch the stacked receiver release at the snap, if the corner jumps the outside receiver in the stack that signals man coverage and opens the inside release for the deep shot. Key the linebacker depth after the run fake, if they step up hard on the mountain zone action that confirms run bite and leaves the intermediate crosser wide open behind them. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, since those coverages take away the deep shot and force you to work the underneath option immediately. Watch for a lurking defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the quarterback, since a smart user can bait the play fake and jump the intermediate route if you telegraph the check down too early.
Run this on early downs, first or second and short to medium, when defenses are keying run based on your Mtn Outside Zone tendencies from this same set. Check pre-snap for single high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since those shells are most vulnerable to the play-action freeze and the deep shot route. Use hot routes to slide the underneath crosser into a man beater option if you see man coverage indicators like a corner in the stack shadowing tight. Pair this play with Mtn Outside Zone and Mtn Divide earlier in a drive to condition the defense into biting on run action, then hit this shot play for the explosive gain. Avoid calling this against known Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells unless you have already hot routed the intermediate route to sit down in the honey hole, since the safety help over the top can erase the deep shot.
