Breakdown

Toss Wk is a perimeter run play out of Shotgun Stack HB WK that tosses the ball quickly to the halfback to attack the edge before the defense can flow to the ball. The blocking scheme relies on the offensive line and TE reaching their blocks to seal the edge while the playside WR stalk blocks the corner, creating a lane outside the tackle box. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the line of scrimmage, read the edge block from the TE or WR, and decide between bouncing outside or cutting upfield based on how the flow defender and force player play their leverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a fast flowing outside linebacker or slot corner who can beat the edge blocker to the spot and set the edge before the toss develops. Identify whether the defense is running a scrape exchange, where the defensive end sits and the linebacker loops around, since this can trap the pulling blockers and blow up the play in the backfield. Check safety depth pre-snap, since a safety rotating down into the box quickly can add a fast flowing defender to the edge and take away the bounce lane. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or crashing down hard on the mesh point, as this is a common way defenses stop toss plays before they get outside the tackles. Man coverage with the corner playing tight to the stack alignment often signals the defense is prepared for perimeter runs, so be ready to check to an inside run or RPO if you see this look.

Usage Tips

Run this out of 11 personnel when the defense shows a lighter box or is aligned to defend inside zone and gap runs, since Toss Wk attacks the edge before flow defenders can rally. Check the defensive front pre-snap for a 4 man front with both ends crashing inside, which opens up the edge for the toss. Use motion or shifts if available to identify man versus zone coverage on the perimeter, since a hard flowing corner or safety can blow this play up before the blocks develop. Pair this with Mtn Outside Zone and Mtn Divide in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect multiple edge and interior run threats from the same formation. On early downs, mix Toss Wk with RPO Zone Alert Screen or RPO Power Alert Screen to keep second level defenders honest and prevent them from crashing down on the toss action. Avoid calling this into stacked boxes with extra defenders showing outside contain, since the numbers advantage disappears and the play loses its explosiveness.
