Bench Switch is a pass play out of Shotgun Stack HB WK that uses a switch release combo to the bench (sideline) side, pairing an out breaking route with a corner or dig route that crosses underneath it to create natural rub traffic against man coverage. The stack alignment forces defenders to sort out release responsibilities at the snap, which delays man defenders and opens throwing windows against both man and zone shells. The primary read progression starts with the switch release side, working from the shorter out or flat breaking route first before climbing to the deeper crossing route if the underneath defender sits.
Look at the cornerback alignment on the stack side before the snap, tight press alignment signals man coverage that the switch release is designed to beat Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who bite on the underneath route will open the window for the deeper crossing route in the progression Identify if the defense is playing Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties, since sinking corners can undercut the out breaking route and take away the first read Be alert for a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot near the switch release, as this play struggles against a disciplined zone defender who reads the quarterback and jumps the crossing route Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play is most explosive, while a well timed cover 3 buzz rotation with a lurking linebacker can shut down both levels of the progression
Check the stack alignment pre-snap and identify whether the defense is showing press man or a soft zone shell before committing to the switch side read
Use motion out of the backfield or a hot route on the backside receiver to clear out a zone defender and simplify the read if you see Cover 3 or Cover 4
This play excels on second and medium to long yardage situations where the defense expects a checkdown, since the switch release routes stress off man and short zone defenders vertically
Pair Bench Switch with Curl Switch and Curl Flat in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the switch release concept and start jumping the rub routes
If the user controlled defender flows hard to the switch side pre-snap, be ready to backside hot route a slant or quick out to punish overcommitted defenses
