Normal Flex Wing is Shotgun's compressed-side answer inside 11 personnel. Instead of splitting both outside receivers wide like standard Normal sets, this set flexes one receiver into a tight slot and drops the tight end into a wing position just off the tackle, creating a bunched three-man surface to one side with an isolated X on the backside. The wing alignment gives you an extra body in the run fit without swapping into a heavier package, which is why the set carries a Gadget tag: defenses have to respect both the added gap and the condensed passing surface off the same look.
The alignment matters most in how it distorts coverage rules. Against man, the tight slot and wing force defenders to align inside out and navigate traffic, so Slot Cross, Slot Out, and Drive all create natural rub situations without needing motion. Against zone, that same compression widens the throwing windows on Z Dig and PA Dig because the flat and curl defenders on the closed side have to sort overlapping route stems while the isolated backside receiver holds the corner and safety honest. Curl Flats gives you the standard high low read to the flexed side, and PA Pack Seams attacks the middle of the field when the defense drops into single high.
The run game leans on the wing as a lead surface. HB Power runs behind the wing seal for a downhill gap scheme, HB Dive punishes light boxes when the defense spreads out to cover the compressed side, and HB Slip Screen turns aggressive edge pressure into free yards. Because PA Under, PA Dig, and PA Pack Seams all stem off the same run action, the set functions as a legitimate play action shell rather than a one dimensional pass grouping, and the isolated X receiver is where you go when you find a favorable one on one with no safety help.
Read the safety rotation pre-snap. If the defense shifts help toward the compressed surface, hot route the isolated backside receiver to a fade or slot streak and throw the one on one.
Establish HB Power and HB Dive early against light boxes so the linebackers commit downhill, then punish them with PA Dig and PA Under on second and medium.
Use Slot Cross and Drive against any obvious man look, especially blitz man, because the traffic from the tight slot and wing forces defenders to trail from behind.
Curl Flats is your default answer against Cover 3 and Cover 4, and blocking the wing on the pass concepts gives you the extra protection body against edge heat.
Save HB Slip Screen for when you have shown the play action package repeatedly, then call it on third and medium against an aggressive user who is crashing the edge.
