Singleback Trips Close condenses the three receiver side inside the numbers, stacking the slot and the outside man tight to the tackle with the tight end aligned as the point of the trips. Unlike Singleback Wing or Doubles where receivers are spread to the boundary, Trips Close forces the defense to make a leverage decision in a tight window: play inside technique and surrender the flat, or widen and open up the seams and the crossers that this set lives on. The 11 personnel grouping means you get a legitimate run threat out of the same look, so nickel defenses have to respect HB Duo and HB Stretch while covering three bodies in a compressed area.
The alignment creates natural traffic. Man coverage defenders have to navigate two or three bodies within a few yards of each other, which is why Inside Cross and Slants are so effective from this set: the rubs happen without you needing to motion anyone. Against zone, the condensed spacing means Stick and Corner Double In flood the intermediate area with more bodies than a Cover 3 curl flat defender can handle, and the isolated single receiver on the backside gets a one on one look with no help in the flat.
The Gadget and SLWR tags matter here. SLWR puts your slot receiver in the trips bunch area where he gets the free run, so if you have a shifty route runner with high release and route running ratings, Trips Close is where you feed him. Mtn Insert Zone Wk, Mtn PA Boot Insert, and Mtn Slot Option give you a run action package off the same alignment, which means your play action shots and boot concepts look identical to Duo and Stretch out of the same formation.
Read the leverage on the condensed trips pre snap: if all three defenders are inside, run Stick or PA Flood to attack the vacated flat, and if they widen, hit Inside Cross or Slants through the middle
Against man coverage with a user on the slot, motion or hot route the point man on a drag so the rub happens naturally and forces the user defender into traffic
On second and medium, alternate HB Duo and Mtn PA Boot Insert from the identical look, since the boot action pulls the flow linebacker and opens the backside crosser
When facing heavy inside pressure, block your HB and check the isolated single receiver on the backside first, because the one on one is your quickest answer to a five or six man rush
Use Mtn Slot Option on third and short: the option route breaks off the leverage of the nearest defender and consistently converts against both man and zone if you read the defender before the break
